A just, equitable, and inclusive community is one that ensures that every member is seen and heard and feels agency. It means having a voice and the opportunity to use one’s voice to make demands upon society and political institutions. It embodies a sense of belonging.

Evidence shows that when marginalized communities have greater representation and leadership, it leads to more equitable policies, improved access to resources, and stronger community resilience.

West Marin Fund has been a key driver in advancing equity and justice in West Marin, and we are committed to continually expanding and supporting this work. Our Equity and Justice initiative prioritizes increasing the representation of Black, Indigenous, and other racially marginalized communities by advocating for and actively recruiting individuals from those communities for grant review committees, advisory roles, board assignments, and staff positions.

Purpose

Fostering a Just, Inclusive Community

  • Support efforts to increase the leadership, voice, and participation in decision-making roles for Black, Indigenous, and people from other racially marginalized communities throughout West Marin.
  • Implement fair and equitable policies in more community spaces to address the needs and priorities of historically marginalized communities.
  • Increase awareness and allyship among non-racially marginalized members of the community to foster more support for equity and inclusion.
  • Create safe places and learning opportunities for West Marin community members of all backgrounds to come together to learn from each other and advocate on behalf of our community.

Collaboration for Impact

The West Marin Coalition for Equity & Justice

The West Marin Coalition for Equity and Justice, or CEJ, is a regional peer-learning community composed of organizations seeking to deepen their practice and understanding for issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging. To date, representatives of approximately 15 organizations have participated as CEJ members in a variety of roles and learning opportunities, from participation in the CEJ steering committee and book club discussions, to engaging in a three-part Racial Equity Journey and, most recently, a strategic planning process. West Marin Fund provides backbone support to the CEJ in the form of administrative support, grant funding, and trainings.
